Protecting Yourself Against Financial Scams

In today’s digital age, protecting your personal information is more important than ever. Cybercriminals are constantly changing their tactics to exploit vulnerabilities and steal sensitive information. By taking proactive measures, you can defend yourself and your money against these threats. Here are some tips to help you protect your finances and personal data:

  • Protect your Personal Information

Safeguard yourself against identity theft and unauthorized use of your personal information by creating strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. Additionally, shred all sensitive documents, such as bank statements and credit card offers before disposing of them.

  • Protect your Devices

Securing your devices is essential in minimizing the risk of scams. Install and regularly update security software to protect your devices from malware and hacking attempts. Avoid using public Wi-Fi when conducting online transactions, and always ensure you are using secure websites to keep your information encrypted and protected.

  • Monitor Financial Activities

Frequently reviewing your financial reports can help you catch discrepancies and potential scams early. Log into online and mobile banking frequently to look for suspicious transactions.  Regularly examine your credit report for any unusual entries or activities you did not authorize.

  • Avoid Quick Decision Making

When making financial decisions, avoid rushing into anything without proper consideration. Refrain from clicking on links in suspicious text messages or emails. If you receive an uninitiated phone call asking you for money immediately, ask for a call back number and refuse to send money until you’ve had the time to consider the request.  Additionally, be suspicious of any requests for payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency, as these are common methods used by scammers.

  • Stay Informed

Keep yourself updated on the latest scam tactics to protect yourself against financial scams. Regularly visit the Federal Trade Commission* (FTC) for tips and updates on protecting your information.
